Die Nacht

Friedrich Adolf Krummacher/Franz Schubert

Entombment of Christ, Flanders 16th century

Large and finely carved retable sculpture of the entombment of Christ. All the biblical personae are present: Christ, Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus, Saint John the Apostle, Mother Mary, Mary Magdalene, Mary Cleophas and Mary Salome. The individual faces have been carved with great attention and care for detail. Especially the bearded faces of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus are outstanding. The figures have been placed in a well balanced composition in front of a dramatic set of rocks. Interesting cascading diagonal of touching hands/arms: hand of St. John on shoulder of Mary, whose hand supports the arm of Jesus. Serious size: 58x34x13cm. Deep brown glowing walnut. Flanders maybe Picardy. Traces of xylophagi, weathered, losses (hands, arms) but overall good condition.
